The FAST concept of Alternate Hierarchies is used at institutions running Banner as their Finance ERP. This function is used for clients who need a way, for reporting purposes, to change or replace the existing baseline (default) Hierarchy in Banner in their current reporting structure. This allows you to re-order a FOAP hierarchy without changing anything in your ERP. Any element of Fund, Orgn, Acct and Prog can be used to create one or more Alternate Hierarchies and none have a necessary relationship to the other; they and built and maintained separately.
Each Alternate Hierarchy is Chart specific.
The admin and set-up for Alternate Hierarchies is all done via the Finance Administration menu. Institutions that also run FAST Budget & Forecasting can also leverage these hierarchies when running the Budget Development Summary reports.
Access can then be assigned to each new Hierarchy at the admin level, or the new hierarchy may also be restricted by role to run at the report level. In other words, you control who can see and use the new hierarchies and who can also edit and manage them.
Staff that you would like to be able to use the Alternate Hierarchies must have one or more Roles in FAST Finance Reporting.
In Finance Reporting -> Administration -> Alternate Hierarchies -> Alternate Hierarchy Administration
Before set-up can begin, you must enter a Chart and you can (optionally) also include a Coding Position (e.g. Fund, Orgn, Acct, Prog):
To begin a new Hierarchy, simply click the + New button on the data entry strip; a new line will open where you can begin the framework. The required fields are Coding Position, Alternate Hierarchy Title and Description. By default, the associated box in the Enabled column will be checked, indicating the Alternate Hierarchy will be selectable for use in reports. Uncheck the box if you do not want the Alternate Hierarchy available for use in reports. Click Save to commit your new Hierarchy, before adding security.
You can also layer on security at this point (optional), including:
Restricted by Role (optional):
If this field is left BLANK, then all end users who have access to the Summary Reports where the Alternate Hierarchies are available will be able to see and run reports using the new tree.
If this field is populated with one or more roles, then ONLY the users in those roles will be able to see and run reports using the new hierarchy.
Admin Access (optional):
If this field is left BLANK, then only the application-level Admins can edit and manage the new hierarchy.
If this field is populated with one or more roles, then all the users in the selected Role(s) can edit and manage the new hierarchy.
Click on the green + key to begin, this will open a Grant Access pop-up where you can select one or more roles from the drop-down list:
Click Save to commit your changes or Cancel to undo.
At this point, your new Hierarchy has been created as an exact static image (copy) of your default Banner Hierarchy and is ready for manipulation.
You are ready to move to the next step of Managing your Alternate Hierarchies.
